What’s going on?
YVR Fixed is organizing some low-stakes, free racing to challenge yourself and build speed this spring. Every other week, there will be a chosen Strava segment for you to test yourself on. Races will be on Monday afternoons/evenings, and the segments will be between 10 and 20 minutes long. You can do it on your own time if you want, or we will try to have a group session when possible.
To ensure fair weather conditions, there will be an 8-hour window to complete the segment. We will post a leaderboard the next day, and segments will be repeated so you can try to beat your own time as we kick into summer.
Rules:
• Join the Strava club so we can easily find your results: PursuitYVR Strava Club
• Ride the segment during the race window (normally Monday between 2 PM and 10 PM)
• Post a photo of your bike and gear ratio when you post your ride on Strava
• NO DRAFTING! It’s an individual time trial format
• Free to compete
The Time Trial: The Race of Truth
A true test of individual speed. Whether you are a power monster or someone who slips past the air itself, there is nowhere to hide when competing against the clock.
On the velodrome, the time trial format is a staple of track racing. The Kilo (1000m) and Individual Pursuit (4km) both use specialized aero-optimized track bikes to achieve some of the fastest speeds in cycling. Racers are highly encouraged to experiment with aerodynamics to find free speed, and pursuit bikes have long been popular among street riders for their wild looks and extreme positions. Feel free to experiment with ways to reduce your drag and go faster.
The time trial is also an excellent way to benchmark your abilities and track your improvements. As the season progresses, challenge yourself to beat your previous time after putting another four weeks of training into your legs. If you’re thinking about racing the YVR Fixed Crit Series, time trials are a great way to build aerobic intensity and practice that race-day mentality.
